Hazel Park UCC is an Open and Affirming congregation!

What does that mean?

What It Means to Be Open and Affirming (ONA)

As a congregation of the United Church of Christ, we are proud to be Open and Affirming (ONA). This designation reflects our public covenant to welcome and include people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions in the full life and ministry of our church.

In the spirit of the UCC’s commitment to extravagant welcome and covenantal love, we affirm the dignity and worth of every person as created in the image of God. We recognize that LGBTQ+ individuals have often been excluded, marginalized, or harmed by religious communities, and we seek to be a place of healing, justice, and radical inclusion.

Being an ONA congregation is more than a statement—it is a journey of faith and discipleship. It informs how we worship, serve, advocate, and live together in community. Our welcome is not just open—it is active, intentional, and grounded in the Gospel’s call to love our neighbors as ourselves.

No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

Who says we are Open and affirming?

The Open and Affirming Coalition of the United Church of Christ is a national ministry that supports and uplifts UCC congregations, ministries, and individuals who publicly affirm the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in the life of the church. Since 1985, the Coalition has been a vital part of the UCC’s witness for justice and equality, offering resources, advocacy, and community for those living into the Gospel call of radical welcome.
